Detail - Pillars of Creation in the Eagle Nebula (Zoomed in center of other Eagle picture)
These famous Pillars (seen with green hue with the famous Hubble picture) are approximately 3 light years high and 1/2 light year deep. The dust that makes them up is only 4,000 particles per cubic centimeter whereas the air on earth at sea level has about 10 to the 19th power particles per cubic centimeter! It is the depth of the dust areas that gives these Pillars their shape and apparent volume. We on earth are not capable of producing a vacuum as perfect as only 4,000 particles per cubic centimeter.
